Declarations of love defy prose. They are deflated by details and analysis. They require the soul of the poet to convey feeling, not facts, in media that can cajole, enfold, and exult. We will hear this in pop songs, in duets from Broadway, ballet, and opera, and lyrics going back to Shakespeare and even beyond.
