Over the Rainbow-The Movies and Music of Judy Garland

Judy Garland revolutionized the movie musical. She danced with Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. She sang with just about everybody. Even before she played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, there are early short films she made with her two older sisters (she was Frances Gumm at the time). We will follow her career, with highlights from 1929 to 1963 (her last film was I Could Go On Singing). She was only 47 when she died, but she left a legacy of over 40 movies, her TV show, and a legendary concert in Carnegie Hall. The class will include film clips and discussions from The Wizard of Oz, several of her Mickey Rooney movies, A Star is Born, and more. There will even be clips from her TV show (including a duet with Barbra Streisand).
