In this course participants will hear about six major infectious diseases that had global impact and changed the course of history. For each disease, the biology, the pathogenesis, epidemiology, public health response and societal impact will be discussed. There will be opportunities for discussion along with lecture. Diseases will include Measles, Tuberculosis, Epstein-Barr Virus, Malaria, River Blindness (Onchocerciasis), and Polio.

Kristina Obom

Kristina Obom, PhD, is Director of the Center for Biotechnology Education and the Program Director for the Master of Science in Bioinformatics Biotechnology programs, Johns Hopkins University. She received her BA in Natural Sciences/Public Health from Johns Hopkins, her MPH in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from Yale, and her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine/City University of New York. She was a 2006 recipient of the Martin Luther King Award for Community Service and a 2009/2010 ASM/NSF Biology Scholar.
