Join me on a behind-the-scenes National Geographic reporting trip to Indonesia. About a year ago, I journeyed to Java to interview Denica Riadini-Flesch, founder of an eco-conscious fashion enterprise called SukkhaCitta. During travels through her native land, Riadini-Flesch was shocked by what she saw: women creating textiles while living in poverty, and a fashion industry polluting the air and water. In 2016, Riadini-Flesch launched SukkhaCitta to bring back the ancient art of batik and to transform the way garments are made. Over the course of a decade, she has succeeded at employing farmers and artisans, growing organic cotton, and creating natural dyes from plants. Her stylish clothes, which sell for hundreds of dollars in Jakarta, are lifting up entire villages. I'll share my reporting notes and photos, which feature Denica, the Javanese villagers I met, the craft of batik, and the concept of "slow fashion"--a global movement that aims to make climate-friendly clothing.
