The die is cast, the pieces in place for a midterm election that will reassert democracy or accelerate the Republic's drift to autocracy. We have a president who does not yield power willingly, and whose actions must be monitored and challenged before Election Day, on the day itself, and in the aftermath of an election whose results he might not accept. This isn't partisan politics. This is reality based on past performance. The midterms are meant to be a check on presidential power, and for the current president, that means the military action against Iran that has destabilized the global economy and his unpopular tariff policies and hardline immigration enforcement. It's hard to imagine a president presiding over this much upheaval emerging unscathed and with his party still controlling Congress. We will know soon enough whether the Democrats can meet the moment and answer the public's growing demand for change.
