Modern romance novels have evolved far beyond the traditional "happily ever after." Today's stories often end with something more nuanced, more grounded, and more reflective of real life: "happy for now." This course explores how contemporary romance uses open-ended conclusions, imperfect characters, and emotionally honest resolutions to teach us about resilience, choice, vulnerability, and the ongoing work of building relationships. Our class reading, Katherine Center's The Rom Commers, offers a vivid example of this shift. Rather than promising a flawless future, Center's novel shows characters who are still growing, still healing, and still figuring out what they want. Over six weeks, students will examine how these endings challenge cultural expectations of love, expand our understanding of fulfillment, and offer a more realistic vision of what it means to move forward with someone or simply with oneself. By studying the modern romance ending, we uncover what these stories reveal about our own lives, our desires, and the futures we dare to pursue
