The Novels of Graham Greene

Short-listed twice for the Nobel Prize, British writer Graham Greene managed the difficult feat of achieving both popular and literary acclaim as a novelist. Greene's life was as exotic as the settings of his novels, filled with tormented love affairs, dramatic religious conversions, WWII espionage, Hollywood screenwriting, and work as a war correspondent in French Indochina. Greene chronicled, as perhaps no other novelist of the Atomic Age, the deep existential rifts of the human heart-the often precarious line between loyalty and betrayal, belief and doubt, sin and redemption. In this course we will learn about Greene's fascinating life and will read and discuss several of Greene's greatest novels: The Power and the Glory, The Heart of the Matter, and The Quiet American.
