American composer Richard Rodgers revolutionized musical theater by seamlessly linking music, lyrics, and dance in service of storytelling. Best known for his partnerships with Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein, his influence stretched well beyond his contemporaries and shaped the future of Broadway by impacting artists like his daughter Mary Rodgers, his reluctant collaborator Stephen Sondheim, his grandson Adam Guettel, and countless others. As the first person to win an EGOT, as well as two Pulitzer Prizes, Rodgers wrote over 900 songs and contributed to more than 40 musicals. This course will examine his upbringing and early musical influences, his work redefining the popular song with Lorenz Hart, and his groundbreaking success with Oscar Hammerstein in Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, and more. We will get to know Mary Rodgers' unique musical style through her landmark work, Once Upon a Mattress, and explore her son Adam Guettel's emotionally and harmonically complex works, The Light in the Piazza and Floyd Collins. Through video and audio performances, artist interviews, and song analyses, we will consider the Rodgers legacy and how it continues to resonate today.
