In his probing account regarding the music of remembrance for the Second World War, Jeremy Eichler examines masterpieces by four of the finest composers of the period. We explore the life and works of Arnold Schoenberg through his A Survivor from Warsaw of 1947, Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen of 1945, Benjamin Britten's War Requiem of 1962 and Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 13 (Babi Yar) of 1962. Jeremy Eichler's cogent writing and profound understanding of these works provides us with an excellent way to discuss these four remarkable composers and their works.
